Watson-McCord Neighborhood Association
The Watson-McCord Neighborhood Association
(WMNA) was formed in September 2003 by a group of concerned residents
sharing the common goal of promoting the stabilization and enhancement
of the Watson-McCord neighborhood. The Watson-McCord Neighborhood
is bounded by 38th Street on the North, Fairfield Avenue on the
South, Woodland Avenue on the East, and Central Avenue on the West.
The community is comprised of many older single-family homes of
historic significance as well as mixed-use buildings, small businesses
and not-for-profit agencies, a public school and several churches.
The neighborhood is a vital cross-section of Indianapolis: it is
racially mixed and economically diverse. Residents include blue
collar workers, doctors, lawyers, members of the police force, educators,
clergy persons, small business owners and civil functionaries.
WMNA’s mission is to
• promote, create, and maintain a viable and productive living
environment conducive to neighborhood enhancement through community-based
problem solving, neighborhood-oriented services and public/private
cooperation.
• promote communication, outreach, and interchange between
board members and residents of the Watson-McCord area through a
quarterly newsletter, bimonthly association meetings, and a website.
• promote community beautification and enhance property owners’
investments, and foster community pride.
• continued development and maintenance of an effective area
infrastructure.
As a result of the suggestions that emerged from community residents'
input, the WMNA has established a series of neighborhood clean up
days; fostered the development of local Crime Watch programs; developed
a weekly fitness program for residents utilizing the Monon Trail;
and made operational a major redesigning plan for McCord Park. In
addition, at the monthly association meetings (click
for calendar), guest speakers offer presentations on issues
of interest to residents (preventing crime; legal rights; trash
collection; petitioning for city services such as maintenance of
streets, curbs and sidewalks; abandoned properties and automobiles;
absentee landlords, etc.) WMNA is committed to continuing to implement
local initiatives that fulfill our mission of promoting and enhancing
the quality of life for neighborhood residents.
